SUMMARY:Approximate Identities
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: SudarshanR. Gurjar\nSchool of Mathematics\nTata Instit
ute of Fundamental Research\nHomi Bhabha Road\nMumbai 400005\n \;\n\nA
bstract: \nI will explain the role played by infinitely differentiable fun
ctions with compact support on the real line. Suitably scaled such functio
ns are very close (with respect to a suitable norm) to being identity elem
ents for the binary operation of convolution of functions. If time permits
\, as an application I will sketch the proof of the famous Weirstrass appr
oximation theorem in real analysis.\n\nOnly knowledge of elementary calcul
us will be assumed.\n
