SUMMARY:The Minimal Complexity of an Adapting Agent Increases with Fitness
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Nikhil Jayant Joshi (California Institute of Technolog
y\nDivision of Biology/Computation and Neural Systems\n1200 East Californi
 a Boulevard\nPasadena\, California 91125\nUnited States of America)\n\nAbs
tract: \nWhat is the relationship between the complexity and the fitness o
f evolved organisms\, whether natural or artificial? It has been asserted\
, primarily based on empirical evidence\, that the complexity of biologica
l organisms increases as their fitness within a particular environment inc
reases via evolution by natural selection.  In this work\, we derive an a
nalytical expression for the minimal mutual information $I(\\mathbf{s}:\\m
athbf{m})$ quantifying the organizational correlation between the sensory
input $\\mathbf{s}$ and the corresponding motor response $\\mathbf{m}$ req
uired for achieving a given fitness level $F$ in a given environment . We
show that under certain conditions\, the minimal mutual information $I(\\m
 athbf{s}:\\mathbf{m})$ is a semi-positive definite\, monotonic non-decreas
ing\, concave function of $F$.\n\nWe also simulated the adaptation of brai
ns of digital organisms living in static mazes\, whose {\\it connectome} e
volves over 10\,000s of generations from a random initial state.  We com
puted the circuit complexity of these brains as they evolve to adapt to t
heir environment using an entropy-based measure known as {\\it integrated
information}. In a confirmation of our theoretical derivation\, we find t
hat the minimal complexity of the animats' brains increases with their fit
ness. That is\, to achieve any given level of fitness\, there exists a min
 imal amount of circuit complexity.\n
