SUMMARY:Building a Quantum Computer: Challenges and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: R. Vijayaraghavan (Tata Institute of Fundamental Resea
rch\nDepartment of Condensed Physics\nand Material Science\nHomi Bhabha Ro
 ad\nNavy Nagar\, Mumbai 400005)\n\nAbstract: \nStoring and processing info
rmation using quantum two level systems (qubits) promises tremendous speed
-up for certain computational tasks like prime factorisation and search pr
oblems. In addition\, many problems in quantum mechanics can also be solve
d a lot more efficiently. Scientist and engineers all over the world are t
rying to build the hardware that can implement these quantum algorithms. I
n this talk\, I will present one particular approach which uses supercondu
cting electrical circuits operating at millikelvin temperatures to impleme
nt the quantum hardware. This architecture uses weakly anharmonic electric
al oscillators to implement qubits and uses microwave signals to control a
nd manipulate them. I will provide an overview of the field and highlight
the challenges ahead. Finally\, I will highlight our efforts at TIFR in im
plementing novel multi-qubit systems using superconducting circuits.\n \n
