 nAbstract: \nAbstract: Social systems are now fueled by algorithms that fa
 cilitate and control connections and information. Simultaneously\, computa
 tional systems are now fueled by people -- their interactions\, data\, and
  behavior. Consequently\, there is a pressing need to design new algorithm
 s that are socially responsible in how they learn\, and socially optimal i
 n the manner in which they use information. Recently\, we have made initia
 l progress in addressing such problems at this interface of social and com
 putational systems. In this talk\, we will first understand the emergence 
 of bias in data and algorithmic decision making and present first steps to
 wards developing a systematic framework to control biases in classical pro
 blems such as data summarization and personalization. This work leads to n
 ew algorithms that have the ability to alleviate bias and increase diversi
 ty while often simultaneously maintaining their theoretical or empirical p
 erformance with respect to the original metrics.\nBio: Elisa Celis is a Se
 nior Research Scientist at the School of Computer and Communication Scienc
 es at EPFL. Starting January 2019\, she will be an Assistant Professor in 
 the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Yale. Previously\, she wo
 rked as a Research Scientist at Xerox Research where she was the worldwide
  head of the Crowdsourcing and Human Computation research thrust. She rece
 ived a B. Sci. degree in Computer Science and Mathematics from Harvey Mudd
  College and a Ph. D. in Computer Science from the University of Washingto
 n. Her research focuses on studying social and economic questions that ari
 se in the context of the Internet and her work spans multiple areas includ
 ing fairness in AI/ML\, social computing\, online learning\, network scien
 ce\, and mechanism design. She is the recipient of the Yahoo! Key Challeng
 es Award and the China Theory Week Prize.\n
